What is Rezūm?

The Rezūm System is an advanced option for the treatment of an enlarged prostate, which is medically termed as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). This technology became approved by the FDA in 2015, making it one of the newest solutions for BPH and the various urologic symptoms associated with it.

How Rezūm Works

Minimally Invasive Treatment for BPH

Rezūm is a minimally invasive technology that utilizes the thermal energy in water vapor to shrink the excess tissue of the prostate that presses on the urethra and causes a variety of urinary problems. Such problems often include symptoms and conditions that include:

  • Urinary incontinence
  • Frequent urge to urinate
  • A weak stream of urine
  • Obstructed urinary outflow

What Happens During Treatment with Rezūm?

In order to perform this procedure, Dr. Mitchell Moskowitz will inject the water vapor (steam) into the targeted prostate tissue. Once injected, the steam will begin to break apart legions that have formed by destroying their cells, convectively driving the water vapor through tissue interstices, where it condenses and transfers the stored thermal energy directly to the targeted tissue. With the legions gone, the urinary channel is now freely open as it should be, which will gradually resolve the patient’s urinary issues.

The Rezūm System is performed entirely within your provider’s office in approximately 5 minutes or less. This simple procedure will require a few days to take full effect, during which time patients will have a catheter in place to assist in urination until anticipated swelling subsides. Three days after your treatment is performed, you will return to Dr. Moskowitz to have this catheter removed, and that’s it! Symptoms will continue to improve for months to come, though patients typically notice the greatest effect of the Rezūm System during the first two weeks after it is implemented.

This treatment is associated with only mild to moderate side effects, which generally consist of some discomfort soon after the procedure is performed. Of course, if you begin to notice any abnormal side effects or symptoms then you should contact Dr. Moskowitz to have them fully evaluated as soon as possible.

Rezūm Frequently Asked Questions

Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is an enlargement of the prostate gland affecting about 50% of men by age 60, and up to 90% of men by age 85. This enlargement can compress the urethra, reducing the flow of urine from the bladder, and sometimes blocking it entirely. The symptoms of BPH include:

  • Urinary frequency
  • Irregular flow
  • Urgency
  • Weak stream
  • Straining
  • Getting up at night to urinate

Rezūm Water Vapor Therapy is a minimally invasive procedure that uses the natural energy stored in a few drops of water to treat the excess prostate tissue causing BPH symptoms. So, you can get back in the game quickly. No need to be in the hospital. And no need to continue taking costly BPH medications.

Clinical studies show that many men living with BPH experience symptom relief with Rezūm Water Vapor Therapy. Rezūm Therapy is indicated for men ≥ 50 years of age with a prostate volume 30cm ≤ 80cm. It’s an option for those who’ve given up on watchful waiting and lifestyle changes, men who’ve stopped or don’t want to start taking BPH medications, or men not interested in other minimally invasive or surgical BPH procedures.

The best way to find out is by talking with Dr. Moskowitz to determine if Rezūm Water Vapor Therapy is a good treatment for you based on your symptoms and treatment goals.

Cost depends on your insurance company and your benefit package. While more and more plans cover Rezūm Water Vapor Therapy, it’s always a good idea to discuss any deductibles or out-of-pocket costs with our office up front. However, there is no guarantee of insurance coverage for a particular procedure or product. It is the responsibility of the patient to contact their insurance provider for specific coverage information.

Since Rezūm Water Vapor Therapy is a minimally invasive procedure, it can be performed in a doctor’s office, clinic or other outpatient setting.

Most patients report relatively minor discomfort during the procedure. Rezūm Water Vapor Therapy can be performed under oral sedation or local anesthesia and doesn’t require general anesthesia. Dr. Moskowitz will discuss your options for maximizing your comfort during the procedure.

Clinical studies show that most men experience symptom relief as soon as 2 weeks after the treatment, and improvements continue for up to 3 months. Patient responses can and do vary.

Clinical studies show that most men return to regular activities within a few days. Dr. Moskowitz will discuss this with you and make personal recommendations.

Current clinical studies demonstrate sustained symptom improvement out to 4 years and studies are ongoing to determine longer term patient outcomes.
